Day 1 – Fundamentals and Methodology
- Introduction to VDA-5 and its importance in the automotive industry: Context and role of VDA-5 in the automotive sector. Development history of the standard, links to ISO 9001, IATF 16949 and other VDA volumes. Comparison with classical MSA according to AIAG.
- Basics of measurement uncertainty: Key definitions and terminology in VDA-5. Sources of uncertainty in measurement processes – the 7M model. Introduction to GUM (Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement).
- Defining qualification criteria for measurement processes and systems based on uncertainty analysis: Calculation and interpretation of capability ratios: QMP – for the measurement process and QMS – for the measurement system. Qualification assessment based on the expanded combined uncertainty of the process (UMP) and system (UMS). Linking QMP to the assessment of production process capability. Determining and interpreting the minimum required tolerance width: TOLMIN-UMP and TOLMIN-UMS.
- Methods for Type A and Type B uncertainty evaluation:
- Type A: statistical analysis of measurement series, calculation of standard deviation.
- Type B: use of data from certificates and manufacturer specifications.
- Building the uncertainty budget and calculating expanded uncertainty: Combining standard uncertainties – law of propagation of uncertainty. Calculation of combined standard uncertainty. Expanded measurement uncertainty – coverage factor (k) and confidence level.
- Capability indices Cg and Cgk: Definitions, formulas, and interpretation. Acceptance criteria for measurement systems according to VDA 5.
Day 2 – Applications and Implementation
- Analysis of measurement system capability: Comprehensive capability analysis of a measurement system. Resolution and its impact on uncertainty. Assessment of repeatability, reproducibility, and linearity. Investigation of systematic measurement error.
- Conformity assessment and decision rules: Conformity evaluation according to ISO 14253-1 and ISO 14253-6. Conformity, non-conformity, and uncertainty zones. Producer’s and consumer’s risks. Practical application of decision rules.
- Qualification of measurement processes for attribute data:
- Capability assessment for alternative (pass/fail) measurements.
- Qualification without reference values: evaluation procedure, chi-square independence test (Bowker Test), principles of inference.
- Qualification with reference values: short and long methods (effectiveness assessment), agreement coefficients: Cohen’s kappa, Fleiss’ kappa, Kendall’s concordance.
- Determination of expanded measurement uncertainty for attribute processes (UATTR) and qualification of a measurement process based on the QATTR ratio (e.g. signal detection method, analytical methods).
- Special processes and validation: Measurement processes for small tolerances – specifics and challenges. Capability of attribute measurement systems. Validation of measurement software – requirements and methodology. Long-term monitoring of measurement process stability.
- Workshop: Planning the implementation of VDA-5 in the organization, corrective actions for incapable measurement systems.
- Audit preparation: The most common nonconformities and how to avoid them.
